Persicaria tinctoria
I have fallen in love with the indigo plant- this variety- Persicaria tinctoria specifically. It grows surprisingly well in our Northwest climate and has produced an abundance of leaves for dying. I harvested the plants down to the ground three times for fresh indigo dye projects as well as for fermenting for homegrown indigo pigment and they were undaunted! Leaves can be used fresh as well at any size.
For best results start indoors in April to transplant out in mid-late May. They need warmth to get going but once they do they won’t quit. Space 12″ apart.
